South Pole. US flag marking the current position of the geographic South Pole. The geographic South Pole is the point around which the Earth turns. It has a latitude of exactly 90 degrees south and all lines of longitude and time zones converge here. The ice cap at the South Pole is over 2000 metres deep and slowly shifting, so the surface is gradually moving. Every 1st January, staff from the US Amundsen-Scott Base measure the current position of the South Pole on the surface, and move the flag and the pole accordingly. Photographed in November 2016. | |
