Westinghouse three-phase alternator. 200kW three-phase alternator produced by the Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Company. Alternators are electrical generators that converts mechanical energy to electricity as an alternating current. In the 1880s and 1890s, Serb-US physicist and electrical engineer Nikola Tesla (1856-1943) patented his initial designs for alternators and related devices. These designs were licensed to Westinghouse who manufactured them. Tesla carried out research that led to key advances in areas such as alternating current power generation and transmission. A type of transformer is named for him (the Tesla Coil), as is the SI unit of magnetic flux density.
