Illustration of the German theologian Martin Luther (1483-1546) burning the papal bull (edict) ordering him to recant his teachings, along with books of canon law, in December 1520. In 1517 Luther posted a set of objections against the Catholic church on the door of the church at Wittenberg. This act is seen as the start of the Protestant Reformation. Luther was excommunicated in January 1521 and called to the Diet of Worms to revoke his heresies. Unwilling to do so, he was declared an outlaw. Luther translated the Bible into German, and his hymns inspired the development of singing in churches. | |
