Bacterial culture from the umbilicus (belly button). Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of bacteria on a skin cell from the umbilicus. Researchers found that the average umbilicus contains 67 different types of bacteria. The commonest types include species of Staphylococci, Corynebacteria, Actinobacteria, Clostridiales, and Bacilli, which accounted for almost 50 percent of the bacteria in the samples. There are around 1000 species of bacteria from 19 phyla found on human skin. Skin flora is usually non-pathogenic, and either commensal (not harmful to their host) or mutualistic (offer a benefit). Magnification: x2500 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
