Mosquito repellent research. Mosquito (family Culicidae) feeding on a blood substitute through an artificial membrane. Scientists have found that when chemical extracts from breadfruit (Artocarpus altilis) were applied to the membrane, mosquitoes did not feed. In some parts of the world breadfruit flowers are burnt to repel biting insects. Scientists are studying the compounds inside this flower to find out what it contains and whether it might lead them to new insect repellents. | |
