Centaurus A galaxy. Optical image of the Centaurus A galaxy (NGC 5128). This large elliptical galaxy was discovered in 1826 by Scottish astronomer James Dunlop and is crossed by a wide, lane of dust thought to be a remnant of a spiral galaxy that collided with it many millions of years ago. Imaged by the Wide Field Imager camera on the MPG/ESO telescope at the La Silla Observatory, Chile. | |
