This marble sculpture from the 2nd century AD of the 'Drunk Old Woman†is a copy of a Hellenistic original dating back to the early 3rd century BCE. The woman is sitting on the ground clutching a large wine flask. This is a symbol indicating her devotion to Dionysus, the god of wine making and wine, ritual madness and religious ecstasy. It is rendered in a very realistic manner in the style of that time which often portrayed persons devoted to vices and the degraded level of their daily life. The expressiveness of the details in her figure indicates great attention and understanding for the psychological and sociological factors of her condition. | |
