| Light micrograph of fibres of the heart conduction system located in the subendocardium of a papillary muscle. They are the Purkinje fibres that are characterized by being larger than the contractile myocytes (to the left of the image). They possess few myofibrils and abundant glycogen, and so have a pale cytoplasm. Intermixed with the Purkinje fibres are small clusters of smooth muscle cells and some adipocytes. The endocardium is located to the right of the image. Magnification: x180 when printed at 10 centimetres across. | |
