Spiral galaxies NGC 4302 and NGC 4298, Hubble Space Telescope (HST) image. At left is the edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 4302, with the tilted spiral galaxy NGC 4298 at right. NGC 4298 is tilted by 70 degrees from face-one, with 4302 tilted by 90 degrees. Visible features include dust lanes (dark) and bright young stars (blue) in the spiral arms. NGC 4302 is around 87, 000 light years across and some 110 billion solar masses. NGC 4298 is about 45, 000 light years across, and some 17 billion solar masses. Both galaxies are around 55 million light years distant, in the constellation Coma Berenices. The image data was obtained in January 2017 with the HST's Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3). For these galaxies in infrared, see image C036/1174. | |
