A network of ice wedge polygons forming a regular pattern on a slope on the north coast of Edgeoya, Spitsbergen, Svalbard. Ice wedges form in permafrost areas due to repeated expansion and contraction of the ground. Meltwater which enters the cracks will freeze later on, adding mass to already existing ice wedges. | |
