Large and Small Magellanic Clouds, composite CCD image. This image combines coloured filter views of the Magellanic Clouds (blue) with a monochrome view of the stars and other objects in the surrounding sky. The two galaxies are the Large Magellanic Cloud (upper left) and the Small Magellanic Cloud (lower right). The image was obtained using a small camera, rather than a large telescope. The equipment used was an SBIG STL-11000M CCD camera and a Canon prime lens, with a long exposure time at the La Silla Observatory in Chile. The monochrome image was obtained using LRGB, a luminance exposure technique. Colour filters were used for the images of the two galaxies. Image published in 2016. | |
