Tesla's turbine. Historical illustration of one of the designs of turbines invented by Serb-US physicist and electrical engineer Nikola Tesla (1856-1943). The rotor of the turbine consists of a row of discs set in parallel, at small distances, and combined with a magnet. As the turbine rotates, electricity is generated. Tesla invented a bladeless turbine and demonstrated it on his 50th birthday in 1906. Tesla's research led to key advances in areas such as alternating current power generation and transmission. A type of transformer is named for him (the Tesla Coil), as is the SI unit of magnetic flux density. | |
