Mammography machine. Specialist X-ray machine designed to image women's breasts to detect abnormal lumps. The breast is flattened between a plastic cover (left) and a metal X-ray plate (black, right), allowing its internal structure to be seen on a low-dose X-ray with the X-rays emitted from the beam area at left. Routine screening allows breast tumours to be detected at an early stage. Once a tumour has been located by this use of X-rays (mammography), a biopsy (tissue sample) can be taken to see whether it is cancerous. | |
