Portrait of Mary Somerville (1780-1872), British mathematician. Somerville took many years to reach the attention of the science world, not surprising considering the age in which she worked. In 1831 she published a translation of Mechanique Celeste"" by Laplace, which won her some distinction. Her 1834 work ""The Connexion of Physical Sciences"" was an enormous success, and included the first suggestion of an unknown outer planet (later discovered and called Uranus). Somerville continued working into her 90s, publishing ""Physical Geography"" and ""Molecular and Microscopic Science"". Somerville College at Oxford University is named after her." | |
