Penile (genital) warts and close-up view of human papilloma virus, computer illustration. Warts (condyloma acuminata) of the anogenital region are caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV) types 6 and 11. HPV infection is transmitted directly during sexual intercourse. There is a significant association in women between HPV infection and the cellular changes (dysplasia) that precede cancer of the cervix. Genital warts are removed by chemical means, usually though a combination of applying podophyllin (an anti-mitotic) and caustic tricholoracetic acid. Recurrences are common. | |
