Polarised light micrograph of a dodder (Cuscuta sp.) plant on its host. This parasitic plant wraps itself around the host plant before penetrating it with projections called haustoria. These insert themselves into the vascular system of the host, from which they absorb nutrients and water. The original root of the dodder in the soil dies. Magnification: x50 at 10cm wide. | |
