Vasectomy is a minor surgical procedure in which the vas deferens duct is cut. This duct carries sperm from the testis into the urethra of the penis. The cut ends of the vas deferens are tightly closed with ligatures. In this way sperm is not ejected at ejaculation and the semen is sperm-free, providing a method of contraception that is safe and close to an efficiency of 100%. About 3-4 stitches close the wound. The bruising and occasional bleeding from the wound clears up within a few days.
