Cheron's neurasthenia treatment. Illustration of French physician Jules Cheron (1837-1900, centre, with syringe) injecting a female patient to treat neurasthenia. This was a general term for neurological and psychological conditions generally described as 'nervous exhaustion'. This injection is taking place at the Saint-Lazare hospital in Paris, France. In 1893, Cheron published 'Introduction a l'etude des lois generales de l'hypodermie, physiologie et therapeutique', describing his treatment of neurasthenia by hypodermic transfusions. This engraving is based on a painting by Julian Russell Story (1857-1919). It is titled: 'Un Laboratoire a Saint-Lazare (Experience de L'Hyperglobulie Instantanee)'. Such treatments, for what were poorly understood conditions, had little effect.
