Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Silica sand n.60 used in golf course sand traps. Note the sharp silica fracture surfaces of this type of silica sand. Silica sand is also found in beach sand. Silica sand is made from broken down quartz crystals silicon dioxide (SiO2) the most common type of mineral in the earth's crust. It can be found in most non-tropical regions of the world. Silica sand is used in industrial processing, to make glass, as fill, and to create moulds and castings. Sand is the general term for broken down granules of minerals or rocks. Silica sand n.60 is used in golf course sand traps. Note the sharp silica fracture surfaces of this type silica sand.
