Velcro-like hooks on the surface of a burdock seed pod (Arctium minus), coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Arctium is a genus of biennial plants, commonly known as burdock or burweed, in the family Asteraceae. Budock seeds are dispersed by animals. Velcro was developed after a study of the burdock seed revealed curved, hooked seed hairs on its surface. This curved hook design was used in the development of Velcro.
