Human T lymphocyte with HTLV-1 infection, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). The virus is centrally located in a large clump (RNA virus, Retroviridae Family). Human T-lymphotropic virus or human T-cell lymphotropic virus (HTLV) is a family of human retroviruses that are known to cause a type of cancer called adult T-cell leukaemia/lymphoma and a demyelinating disease called HTLV-I associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP). The HTLVs belong to a larger group of primate T-lymphotropic viruses (PTLVs). Magnification: x3, 000 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
