Blood monocyte and phagocytosis of a dying red blood cell, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Monocytes are derived from bone marrow monoblasts and promonocytes. A monocyte is a circulating phagocyte that ingests microbes, invading particles, cellular debris and dying red blood cells. They are delivered to the blood and can enter the tissues to develop into macrophages. Magnification: x2, 000 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
