Cancer cell labelling research. This cancer cell has formed a star-shape due to the use of micrometre-scaled adhesive islands on gold surfaces. This is a technique known as nanomaterial-assisted cell migration, and is being used to study metastatic cancer (the spread of cancer cells). The shapes affect the behaviour of the cells, making it easier to screen cell populations for cancerous cells. The technique is also being studied for drugs that target metastatic cancer cells and their ability to spread. This work was carried out by researchers at the Northwestern University Center of Cancer Nanotechnology Excellence, USA. Image produced in 2008. | |
