The fifth instar of the Thoas Swallowtail ( Papilio thoas ) is patterned and shaped like a bird dropping - a remarkable case of disguise camouflage. It hides in plain sight. A number of related species use a similar pattern. As long as the caterpillar remains still in the presence of a predator it will normally go undetected and few birds would attempt to eat faeces.
