Benedict's test for sugar. The LH test tube contains a solution of copper (II) sulphate (CuSO4), tartaric acid and sodium hydroxide known as Benedict's reagent. From L to R the remaining tubes contain Benedict's reagent in a dilute glucose sugar solution of 0.1%, 0.3%, 1% and 3% respectively. A positive test results is an orange precipitate, which is seen in varying densities in the tubes. In the presence of sugars, the copper sulphate is reduced to insoluble orange copper (I) oxide. Sucrose sugars do not give a positive result. | |
