| Hydroelectric model town. 19th-century illustration of a model town powered by energy from a hydroelectric power station. The energy of the waterfall (left) is converted by turbines and generators into electrical power, providing heat, light and electricity. The first hydroelectric power station was opened in 1878, and by the end of the 1880s there were hundreds of hydroelectric power stations in the USA and Europe.
