Formaldehyde. Molecular model of the organic compound formaldehyde (C.H2.O), also known as methanal. This is the simplest aldehyde. It is a colourless toxic gas with a pungent odour. Formaldehyde dissolved in water (formalin) was used to preserve biological specimens. Atoms are represented as spheres and are colour-coded: carbon (grey), hydrogen (white) and oxygen (red).
