Pneumonia. Coloured chest X-ray showing the lungs of a 37-year-old man with right lower lobe pneumonia. This is seen at lower left, where the lower part of the right lung is relatively opaque. This opacity is caused by the pneumonia. Bacterial pneumonia, which results in inflammation of the lung, is most commonly caused by the bacteria Streptococcus pneumoniae. The pathogen is inhaled into a lung segment, or lobe, where it causes the alveoli (air sacs) to become blocked with pus. Treatment is with antibiotics.
