Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of cells from the five cancers with the highest mortality rates. Clockwise from top left are; colorectal, breast, prostate, pancreas and lung cancer cells. Almost half of all cancer deaths are lung, bowel, breast or prostate. Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer among women in both developed and developing countries. Lung cancer is the most common type of cancer among men globally. When looking just at developed countries, though, prostate cancer is the most common among men. Twenty million new cases of cancer are expected to be diagnosed in 2030, and, by 2030, 13 million cancer deaths are predicted. | |
