Thirty Meter Telescope, illustration. The TMT is an optical telescope comprising 492 hexagonal segments that combine to form a primary mirror measuring 30 metres in diameter. Light from the primary mirror will be reflected to secondary and tertiary mirrors where adaptive optics will compensate for distortions in the Earth's atmosphere. The mirrors will be housed in a large revolving dome measuring 66 metres in diameter. A laser produces multiple artificial stars that assist the adaptive optics. The TMT was scheduled to be built on Mauna Kea, Hawaii, USA, but the location may be changed to the Canary Islands following protests. It is scheduled to be completed in 2018. | |
