This research may have applications in the development of resilient plumbing, concrete, or body armour. Photographed at the Mathematical Institute at the University of Oxford, UK, on a floor made of Penrose tiles. These represent the pattern of quasicrystals, unusual structures which are ordered, but without a repeating pattern.
