Andrew Goodwin, British chemist. Goodwin's research explores the disorder and flexibility between atoms in crystal structures. This research may have applications in the development of resilient plumbing, concrete, or body armour. Photographed at the Mathematical Institute at the University of Oxford, UK, on a floor made of Penrose tiles. These represent the pattern of quasicrystals, unusual structures which are ordered, but without a repeating pattern. | |
