Giovanni B. Grassi. Portrait from 1910 of Giovanni Batista Grassi (1854-1925),Italian zoologist and malaria pioneer. Grassi made contributions to anatomy through his work on bees, termites, eels and other species. Working in collaboration with a number of colleagues,he also made contributions to the study of malaria transmission. In 1889-90 he suggested that different species of the Plasmodium protozoa caused different varieties of malaria. In 1898 Grassi demonstrated that only the Anopheles mosquito could transmit malaria to humans and in 1900 proved that Anopheles maculipennis actually did. In 1900 he published his results in Studies of a Zoologist on Malaria | |
