This equipment is used in the refining process of saltpetre (potassium nitrate KNO3),a constituent of gunpowder. When the removal of impurities has reached the point that the soluble constituents have been eliminated, the next stage is to separate the insoluble impurities from the saltpetre. This involves adding the saltpetre to a cauldron of water in which it dissolves when the water boils. Once the insolubles have been removed, the saltpetre solution is transferred to a crystalliser where it forms crystals after cooling.
