Musk oxen. View of two adult musk oxen (Ovibos moschatus) and a yearling in snow. Musk oxen live in herds of 10-100 led by one or more dominant males. The musk ox is so called because during the mating season (around August) the males give off a distinctive smell of musk. Musk oxen feed on birch and willow leaves in summer and dig for mosses and roots in winter. They inhabit Arctic tundra from Canada to western Greenland. Musk oxen herds defend themselves by forming a defensive circle. Females and young males stay on the inside while adult males stay on the outside and fend off attackers.
