Bison or buffalo (Bison bison) silhouetted against the sky. Steam is rising off its warm body into the cold air as it stands in the snow. The bison is the largest terrestrial mammal in North America. It mainly feeds on grass, but will forage for other vegetation when this is scarce. Once widespread from Alaska to northern Mexico, the bison population was decimated when the white settlers arrived in North America. Bison are now listed as endangered and are found in the wild only in the Wood Buffalo Park,Canada, and in Yellowstone National Park,USA,where this photograph was taken | |
