Zebra mother and foal (Equus sp.). Zebras are wild horses that live on the vast grassland plains of eastern Africa. The foal is born after a gestation period of a year and stays with its mother's herd, which can number several hundred individuals. Like other mammals, zebras feed on their mother's milk when they are first born. After weaning, they graze on grass. Zebras are an important prey animal for large carnivores such as lions.
