Snowshoe hare. Snowshoe hare (Lepus americanus) sitting in snow. The snowshoe hare lives in woodland and forest edges throughout North America, apart from the southern USA. This white colouration develops in the autumn as camouflage in the snow. In the summer months, this hare is a light brown colour. It eats a wide variety of foliage when available, but in the winter they may eat bark if food is scarce. It is typically a solitary animal, and lives alone in a small burrow in its territory. The snowshoe hare is an important prey animal for a variety of carnivores, including the fox, lynx and weasel. Photographed in Montana,USA | |
