Black-backed jackal. Howling black-backed jackal pups (Canis mesomelas). An average of six cubs are born after a gestation of two months, although only two or three of them may make it to adulthood. The black-backed jackal inhabits open plains and sparse vegetation from Egypt,Sudan and Somalia down to South Africa. Although the black- backed jackal has a diverse diet,it is primarily a scavenger, living on the remains of kills made by large predators such as lions. In areas inhabited by humans, this jackal can become a pest,as it threatens sheep and other livestock. Photographed in the Kalahari Gemsbok National Park in South Africa | |
