Grey wolf puppy howling. Three month old grey wolf puppy (Canis lupus) practising howling. Wolf puppies are born in spring, usually in litters of between 4 and 7 individuals. Howling is a means of long-distance communication. Grey wolves are social animals which live in packs of five to 15 members. They live throughout the northern parts of the world, and also in the more southern parts of Asia. The pack is ruled by a dominant pair. They hunt large prey as a pack, including bison, deer, elk and mountain sheep. A wolf could not hope to kill one of these animals alone. They may also eat smaller animals, such as beavers.
