Kermode black bear. Kermode black bear (Ursus americanus kermodei) on rocks beside a stream. This subspecies of American black bear lives in western British Columbia. About one in ten of these bears shows this white colouration and is called a spirit bear. American black bears are basically vegetarian in nature,but will eat meat when it is available. They are solitary animals,and may be active both during the day and at night. They hibernate for up to seven months when food is scarce.
