North American raccoon,Procyon lotor,washing its paws in a river. The raccoon lives in most types of environment,including mountains,cities and forests,but prefers to be near water. It is omnivorous,eating plant matter as well as hunting insects,crustaceans and occasionally fish,frogs and smaller mammals. The raccoon is known for its habit of washing its food with water or with its hands before eating it. It is mainly nocturnal,and tends to be solitary and territorial,meeting only to mate.
