Black-footed ferret. Black-footed ferret (Mustela nigripes) in its den. This endangered mammal is now found in small scattered communities on the American prairies. Black-footed ferrets hunt prairie dogs and live in their burrows. Ferret numbers declined as prairie dogs were killed due to their competing with livestock for available vegetation. These ferrets are mainly nocturnal. Photographed in Wyoming,USA | |
