Eastern chipmunk (Tamias striatus) stood on a bed of moss near a trillium blossom. The eastern chipmunk leads a solitary existence and is diurnal (active during daylight hours). This chipmunk feeds on seeds, fruit, nuts and insects and carries food in its cheek pouches to its burrows, where the food is hoarded. When the pouches are full, they can be as large as a chipmunk's head. Although the eastern chipmunk hibernates,it wakes up periodically and snacks on stored seeds and nuts | |
