Bornean orang-utans. Young Bornean orang-utan (Pongo pygmaeus pygmaeus) peering over its mother's back. Orang-utans are solitary animals and it is only mothers and their offspring that form long term bonds. Of all the great apes, the orang-utan is the most distantly related to man,yet is name originates from the Malay phrase meaning "forest person". It is the only true arboreal (tree-dwelling) great ape,as well as being the largest tree-dwelling mammal. Long arms, great strength and grasping feet have adapted it for its life in the trees.
