Common hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus) walking through a mossy area. Its head and back are covered with dense, sharp spines,2-3 centimetres in length. While its eyesight is poor,a hedgehog's hearing and smell are acute and when threatened or alarmed,it curls up into a tight ball for protection. This done by contracting a sheet of muscle across its back. The hedgehog is found in forests, heathland and scrub throughout northern and central Europe. As an omnivore,a hedgehog's diet includes berries, insects, worms and small vertebrates. They are nocturnal and hibernate throughout winter | |
