Male red kangaroo (Macropus rufus,or Megaleia rufa) drinking from a watering hole. The red kangaroo is the largest of the marsupials, the primitive mammals that give birth to underdeveloped young which are then reared in a pouch. It lives in large groups,or "mobs",throughout the arid grasslands of Australia, eating grass and other plants. The red kangaroo is usually active in the evening and during the night, especially in hot weather. Photographed at dusk in Thrushton National Park,Queensland,Australia | |
