Wompoo pigeon,or magnificent fruit dove (Ptilinopus magnificus),on its nest in a tree. This pigeon inhabits tropical rainforests in northern and eastern Australia and parts of New Guinea. It feeds almost exclusively on fruits. Its nest is a loose aggregation of sticks and twigs, into which it lays (usually) two eggs. The wompoo pigeon is named after its call, which is a loud "wooom-pooo". It is a large pigeon, and may reach a length of nearly 40 centimetres. Photographed in the McIlwraith Range,Australia | |
