Horned puffin. Horned puffin (Fratercula corniculata) sitting on grass. This puffin inhabits the North Pacific Ocean, from Alaska round to Japan. Horned puffins spend most of their lives at sea, returning to land only to lay their eggs. They typically find crannies and natural rock tunnels in cliffs rather than build a nest. Puffins are strong swimmers, and chase fish through the water with a powerful flying action. The large brightly-coloured bill is used in displays during the breeding season. Horned puffins reach about 30-40 centimetres in length. Photographed on Saint George, one of the Pribilof Islands,Alaska,USA | |
