American oystercatcher (Haematopus palliatus) with two of its chicks. This shorebird inhabits coastal regions and mudflats around the southern parts of North America,and as far north as Massachusetts in the east. It lays two or three eggs,which it incubates for around a month. The young take just over a month to fledge. It feeds exclusively on aquatic invertebrates,particularly bivalve molluscs.
