White-tailed ptarmigan. White-tailed ptarmigan (Lagopus leucurus) camouflaged on rocks partly covered in snow. White-tailed ptarmigans live in the mountains of western North America, from Alaska to New Mexico. They eat leaves, buds and some insects. They are protected from the cold in their habitat by a thick layer of insulating feathers. Their plumage changes colour with the seasons, being pure white in the winter and fully brown in the summer. In autumn,as here,a mixture of the two is displayed. They live in large flocks after the breeding season, and are a popular prey bird for a variety of carnivores.
